Miss Bimbo

by BrokenPorcelainDoll @ 26. Mar 2008 - 21:35:42

It has recently come to my attention, via my trusty daily obsession with online feminist blogs and websites, that a new webgame, called Miss Bimbo, has been gaining increasing popularity with young girls.  The game, apparently, involves creating a female character, which you then give plastic surgery, diet pills and makeovers to in order to move up the ranks of bimboing.

Now, of course I only have the information from my preferred websites on which to make a judgement, but at firstglance this is a little concerning.  I don't want to make a judgement without checking my facts first, of course.

For that reason, I have decided to review the game, regularly, on my blog.  I will create a character, with the aim being to firstly, test the boundaries of the game and try to break it (ie, can I overfeed my character on diet pills or sweets and notice any damage, are there any risks or warnings involved when giving it endless amounts of plastic surgery, and how hideously unfashionable can I make it look on purpose) as well as taking into consideration the game's steps towards responsibly providing such a game marketted towards children, and my own feminist, HAES point of view.

I'll update regularly on here with my progress, and will try and organise it vaguely into chapters for ease of reference.

:)

Hiya, I read your comment on feministing about how you were going to sign up for Miss Bimbo and blog about it. I'm doing the same thing, so really I'm just commenting to remind myself to come back and see what you've written too! Good luck with your Bimbo experiment, I think we'll both need it to get through playing this nonsense ;)

You too, this could either turn out to be an interesting experiment or an exercise in frustration!

Hi there,
I saw this on Feministing and decided to do a "Bimbo experiment" as well. I'm also going to blog about it. I don't think I'll last too long though, just looking at the website makes me sick.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading about your experiences.

just checked out the Miss Bimbo website.. quite funny, i mean... are you girls suprised about this? its an age where hip hop stars call their girlfriends "bitches" (when the old school R&B and hip hop actually had some repect to women - listen to early boyzIImen, michael jackson, lional ritchie, 2pac) its like the more insulting you are to a woman the more attractive it is (to the woman!!!)..hahaha it just cracks me up!

Naw, I'm not really surprised, just disappointed.

I think that access to games is an interesting thing. I'm kind of in a round-about way glad these lads were able to make whatever they wanted and put it online. However, unlike PC games and console games, there's no regulatory system for browser-based games like Miss Bimbo, which means anybody can access it. That's what cheeses me off. I very strongly believe in the ESRB and whatever-the-name-of-the-UK-system-is, there is content out there that is and isn't appropriate for various age groups, and I kind of feel like gaming is being underminded when games like Miss Bimbo get through the loopholes.

Your concern is that in the normal gaming arena that you get age certificates tagged on the games and stuff.. just like the movies... but wa-hey! welcome to the world wide web. i mean... you can apply that to online pornographic sites too then right? any kid can log into www.youPORN.com and have their very own porno version of youtube! in that case a lot of things cheese me off! :)

Precisely. It cheeses us off, so we elect to do something. Besides, just because it "isn't surprising" doesn't mean we should just sit down and let it happen. If anything, when problematic issues become more prevalent, that is all the more reason to speak up about it.

Besides, once I actually go in depth on this, I might find that the game isn't as bad as I suspected, and if that is true then I will say that in my review.

Besides, children can't easily access porn if their parents just spend a short amount of time setting up a special log in for the child on the computer with restricted internet access- but there is nothing on this game to flag up problems with net nanny or other options.

Yeah, that's problematic too, of course.

Sorry... not meaning to nitpick but I'm curious re: one thing you said here.

"its like the more insulting you are to a woman the more attractive it is (to the woman!!!)"

Which women are you talking about, here?
